Notre équipe de recherche se spécialise dans la caractérisation des bactériophages.

Il est maintenant reconnu que les bactériophages (ou phages) sont les entités biologiques les plus abondantes de la planète. Ce sont des virus qui infectent et détruisent spécifiquement des bactéries. On les retrouve aux mêmes endroits que les bactéries et ils jouent un rôle prépondérant dans le maintien de l’équilibre des écosystèmes. En fait, les phages sont d’excellents modèles viraux applicables à une panoplie de domaines.

Les bactériophages peuvent être à la fois nos amis et nos ennemis. Amis puisqu’ils suppriment des populations bactériennes aux propriétés nocives, incluant des bactéries pathogènes. Ces phages peuvent avoir des applications industrielles et médicales comme agents de biocontrôle. Ennemis puisqu’ils détruisent des bactéries domestiquées par l’homme jouant un rôle important dans les fermentations, particulièrement dans l’industrie agroalimentaire.

Nos travaux de recherche ont pour objectif d'approfondir les connaissances sur la biologie des phages. On privilégie une approche intégrative (combinant des données de génomique, transcriptomique, protéomique, et de biologie structurale) pour comprendre les interactions entre les phages et les bactéries. De nouveaux outils sont développés pour éliminer les bactériophages dans les fermentations laitières et également pour optimiser leur utilisation comme antibactériens dans divers secteurs industriels et de santé publique.
